It is the sodium salt of carbonic acid. E500
Definition and Areas of Use: :
It dissolves in water at 20 ˚C in 30gr/100ml. It increases the pH value of the pool water and neutralizes the acidic components in the pool due to the high alkaline substances it contains. It is undoubtedly the most industrially important of all alkali metal salts. This compound is found as a mineral in certain marine plants and some rocks. Its deposits are in Africa and Asia. In the Solvay method used today for the production of sodium carbonate, saturated sodium chloride solution is first treated with ammonia and then with carbon dioxide, and the sodium carbonate produced in this way is called Solvay soda.
Usage areas
It is used for whitening laundry and especially tulle. Sodium carbonate precipitates the ions that cause hardness in water as carbonate and removes them from the environment. In this way, it is used as a softener in washing machines.
It is the most important chemical used in glass production. Sand and soda are combined, heated to very high temperatures and cooled suddenly. This is how glass is produced.
When reactive dye is used in the textile industry, sodium carbonate is used to form the bond between the dye and fiber.
As a food additive, it acts as an acid regulator, anti-caking agent and stabilizer. It is used in the production of sherbet powder.
It acts as a wetting agent in brick making, so less water is needed when extruding the clay.
It is used as a foaming agent in toothpastes. It creates friction and raises the pH of the mouth.
