Definition and Usage:
Hydrochloric acid, popularly known as salt spirit, is a chemical compound composed of the elements hydrogen and chlorine. It exists as a gas under normal pressure and at room temperature. Today, it is used in all areas, from the iron and steel industry to the PVC field, organic matter production and the food industry. Besides these conveniences, Hydrochloric acid actually has a poisonous content. It causes damage to many surfaces, including the human body. When handling this acid, extreme caution should be exercised and necessary precautions should be taken. It has both a toxic and irritating effect. It causes burns on the skin and irritation in the respiratory system. To obtain hydrochloric acid, hydrogen gas must first be obtained. Hydrogen chloride normally boils at 110 degrees and melts at -27 to 32 degrees.
Hydrochloric acid is a compound consisting of one chlorine atom and one hydrogen atom, represented by the formula HCl. This compound dissolves at a high rate of approximately 450 liters in one liter of water at room temperature. Like other acids, it gives a color called acid color. It has a high effect on bases such as ammonia and sodium carbonate. If hydrochloric acid is dropped into water, it gives H+ ions. It releases hydrogen as it acts on metals such as iron, zinc, aluminum and magnesium. Although it reacts with the oxygen of the air along with copper, hydrogen is not released here. Hydrochloric acid also has a rust removing effect. When carbonates react with this compound, carbon dioxide is released. When interacting with organic compounds, chlorinated products can be obtained.
Usage areas
- This compound is an inorganic acid used in different areas. The concentration of the acid varies depending on the area in which it is used. It is used in many areas such as pickling of steel, production of inorganic substances, creating organic compounds, and maintaining pH balance. It is used in industry in areas such as petroleum, resin regeneration, paper, medicine, paint, chemistry, textile and metal chloride production.
-
- Pickling of steel: Hydrochloric acid is frequently used in the pickling process to clean steel. First, the rust on the iron is removed with 18% concentration Hydrochloric acid. Then the pickling process is carried out.
-
- Obtaining organic compounds: Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of organic substances such as Vinyl chloride produced for PVC material. Organic compounds such as activated carbon, ascornic acid, bisphenol A and polycarbonates can be obtained in this field. Phosgene obtained from hydrochloric acid is an organic substance used as a chemical weapon in World War I.
-
- Production of inorganic compounds: The majority of inorganic compounds are produced by acid-base reaction. Hydrochloric acid, one of the acids in them, has a very important place. Substances such as ferric chloride are separated from water with this effect, and the waste water in water treatment plants is cleaned. In addition, Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of materials such as accumulators and batteries.
-
- Ensuring pH control: Hydrochloric acid is used to reduce the basic value in any solution. With this, the acid-base values in the solution can be changed. The pH values of pool water, drinking water, food and medicines are controlled in this way.
-
- Renewal of ion exchange: High quality Hydrochloric acid is used to control and renew ion exchange. Materials such as resin can be manipulated in this way.
-
- Other Usage areas: Hydrochloric acid, one of the most important substances in the chemical industry, is a material used in many branches of industry. It is also used in house cleaning, leatherworking and construction industry. Petroleum exploration is carried out with Hydrochloric acid injected into the rocks. It is also used in the production of additives in the food industry.
